Mindfulness is an evidence-based clinical skill.
Clinical trials have shown that mindfulness-based cognitive therapy can be as effective as maintenance antidepressant medication in preventing relapse of recurrent depression.1
Research has also demonstrated that structured mindfulness programs can reduce anxiety symptoms as effectively as common antidepressant medications such as escitalopram, while often producing fewer side effects.2
General practice is more demanding than ever.

"I am so surprised by how much my life has changed in the space of a few months! A few months ago I was considering quitting my job as I was so burnt out and miserable at work. Increasing mindfulness and having moments of mindfulness throughout my day at work has transformed them...I honestly feel like a new person."
"Loved the course. I feel I have learnt powerful skills to make my life and medical practice more meaningful.
I feel more engaged in consultations and have new treatment modalities for stress, chronic pain, anxiety."
"I like the balance of science evidence based information to complete the meditation components."
"Was very helpful and gave me a broader understanding of what mindfulness is about. Helpful to put grounding with breathing/focussed attention into practice daily, as a way of stepping back and seeing the bigger picture.
Thank you, very helpful and enjoyable."
"I really enjoyed this course as it helped me as well as helping my patients. I thought it was well presented and easy to engage with. I do not think there are any improvements and I am really grateful I found it as part of my Focused Psychological Therapies CPD updating."
"More awareness and appreciation of nature in my surroundings. Greater awareness of unhelpful thoughts and ability to reframe them."
"The course was well crafted and encouraging for developing a personal mindfulness practice."
"You should be congratulated +++ for bringing this to the medical profession - and wider community. It's amazing - when I trained, medical schools had no focus on doctors looking after themselves, so they can look after others. Now they can! Keep up the fantastic work."

"It's a fabulous course! I wish there were more courses like this in my early career. It's so essential for healthcare workers to practice self care for ourselves rather than continuous self sacrifice for our patients. I think the weekly topics are structured well. They are relevant and very easy to follow and understand."
"I wanted to help my patients but I have actually helped myself first. I didn’t realise how burnt out I actually was and now I feel I can cope."
"It was delivered in a gentle and encouraging way, I was surprised by the pre and post questionnaire results. It really did work to reduce my response to stress, I am grateful I took the time to undergo this course."
"My PSS has improved in terms of my self compassion. I have again encouraged my patients to journal and be more structured and intentional in their own self care. It has been a very effective tool to remind myself to use more intentionally."
"Dear Lisa, Thank you for offering the mindfulness course to health professionals, so needed in this particular space...My main surprise was I thought I was pretty good at self care...but the screens done for this course made me realise I have quite a lot more work to do - I feel...like I have been given a gift e.g. "Wait, you mean I can feel even more calm and enjoy life even more??"
"You have done an excellent job of integrating the practice with the theory..."
"Thank you for this course...You have skilfully wrangled doctors who generally like to focus on learning theory, into experiential learning."

GPMHSC Focussed Psychological Strategies CPD Recognition and Mental Health CPD
It has made me more insightful to patient's need, attuned to their needs and unspoken
words. It helped a lot of my patients with mental health, day to day stressors and chronic
pain. Being an integrative GP who is also trained in Focused Psychological Strategies and
working in culturally and linguistic diverse population, it has helped me tremendously.
Everybody in my clinic including the receptionists, practice manger who are often the first point of contact for patients could all benefit from learning and practicing mindfulness, but it is more especially so for my other doctor colleagues and the Practice Nurses.
I intend to gradually discuss how much I have benefited from mindfulness with my colleagues and then encourage them register for the course as well.
I have noted that I am much more aware when I am in a stressful situation and am trying to implement the mindfulness practices I have learnt through this course.
It does help with the
chronic pain I myself have and in these situations I do turn to the meditation techniques which does help especially when trying to fall asleep at night.
This course has improved my stress levels and reduced my level of burnout which in turn
has improved my capacity to care for my patients well
By being more mindful and in the present means that you give your attention to the patient at hand and therefore listen more, less likely to make mistakes.
If your are not as stressed this also will help the patient to feel calmer and perceive their consultation in a more positive way.
The regular practice of mindfulness improved my stress levels which has a positive impact on my performance as a GP
I am more focused at one task rather than multitasking, more empathetic and more chilled out as per my family. I have noticed I am more calm and less irritated at end of day. Just being mindful has made me more at peace. My perceived stress score has decreased from 33 to 19 by doing this 8 week course.
It allows me to manage my own emotions and also de-stress myself due to my hectic work schedule.
I have found my ability to manage anticipated and actual challenging situations much
improved. I have also started to introduce techniques learned to patients where
appropriate.
Less bothered by situations outside of my control Living closer to my values (even if that has meant difficult activities and conversations)
Able to better identify what is important and
warrants my attention.
I am less stressed. at work and at home. Able to cope better with stressful situations. I have
been more effective at work, able to give my best to my patients. Work place is more
relaxing environment and staffs are happier.
I have more acceptance and gratitude in daily life . Interacting with others has been better
incorporating the loving kindness. I have been less stressed and I really like using the
anchors to incorporate mindfulness into daily life. Very worthwhile course.
I am calmer! I am more able to stop and step back, and make decisions
about how to react. I am coping better with stress and pain. I am able to note my mind
wandering and guide it back (and I have ADHD!). I have been able to moderate my negative emotions so that they have less impact on me and those around me.
In my personal life I feel that I am a better mother to my toddler as I am able to let go more of things I cannot control and not be too harsh on myself when mistakes happen.
I have noticed my stress levels are lower, I feel more resent and less caught up in thoughts and worries about the future. I feel less reactive to negative thoughts. My wellbeing has improved and I am enjoying my work more.
I am less stressed at work and home. easier to focus and to be present at the moment. I
have stopped multitasking and it is more efficient and calming. I feel more connected and present with my patients.
I have been more mindful at home and at work. It is easier to be mindful at home as when at work everything is so busy and chaotic.
I have found myself noticing more in the environment ie sounds and smells and sensations. I have noticed I pause more to reflect, regroup when I am stressed at work. Lisa's suggestions of how to do this during a working day were very helpful. It is amazing how quickly you can notice a benefit with mindfulness.
Loving kindness is a great way to approach life.
Much calmer, happier, more attentive I have actually started to really enjoy medicine again
and seeing patients. I feel i can connect better with them Also, things at home with my wife and kids just feel much happier and easier.
I am more present I am calmer I have improved stress tolerance I am less reactive I am a better listener I am better able to train my patients in mindfulness skills I am utilising more mindfulness techniques with my mental health patients.
I don’t feel like I’m on auto pilot as much. I can pause and take a moment before responding or reacting.
I’m sleeping well. I’m noticing everyday things more often and being grateful for
what I have, what I can feel. I feel I’m more present in the moment. I'm listening to patients friends family in a better way. I find it easier to not get sucked into vortex of other peoples stress/ anxiety/ sadness.
This has been very helpful to my work in engaging with patients and has been beneficial to my relationships.
This course has definitely helped me learn more about mindfulness and meditation and be able to implement this both for myself and to help guide patients too. I now realise that
even small amounts of time being mindful can be really beneficial, even at work and that there are many ways to be mindful that I can choose according to what is most suitable given the time I have, what I'm doing at the time and where I am.
I am more relaxed, appreciate my life and things around me more and have a way to reduce my stress/ anxiety during a busy or stressful day at work.
I feel empowered to discuss a mindful approach with appropriate patients and to direct them for further help/ counselling connected with mindfulness.
Reduced stress. Focus on completing priority tasks individually before moving to the next.
Reduced sense of feeling overwhelmed. Improved attentiveness in interactions.
Improvement in general well-being.
This activity has come at a right time in my personal life circumstance. Has made me calmer, more kinder and most importantly to be non judgemental of myself and others . My relationship has gotten better in my personal life
I am much more self aware. I try to go slower and be present day-to-day.
I notice my
thoughts more, and remind myself that my thoughts are not facts. I feel I have many more ways to handle stress.
I am sleeping better. I am more present to patients and
Making time to meditate daily; fitting this into everyday practice; this caused me to feel less
stressed and better able to cope with demands during the work day; had some tools to demonstrate to patients and they received these well.
Improved awareness of my own emotions. More rapid self-regulation Improved sleep
I have noticed I have become more aware of myself within a consultation and more aware
of the patient. I have always practiced active listening but when mindful listening is added, it benefits the patient and myself. As many of my consultations are mental health related , the time to practice kindness to myself was often neglected. I have changed my timings of consults so that I do have time to look and reflect on myself and my patients
Less anxiety and stress, sleeping better with daily meditation and less feelings of being
overwhelmed at work.
More relaxed, happier, less stressed, more able to be mindful/in the moment, less reactive to stuff that is out of my ability to control.
I'm calmer, more stable emotionally and less overwhelmed. To be able to be aware of one's emotions and not let them run wild and to be able to connect to the present moment by using very simple techniques really helps to prevent feeling wiped out at the end of the day.
This was a good excuse to escape from my usual busy day and relax. Working and trying to be a good mum to a 2yo have proven to be very energy consuming but this course has given me a time to relax and recharge. Thank you.
I found the pacing of sessions over the 8 weeks really helpful as it allowed lots of time to implement the new learning each week before moving on to the next session.
I think this course is marvellous. Thank you for making us to know better about ourselves. I practiced all the concepts taught in your course. I enjoy the benefits now itself. Please
continue your work.
I thought the course was terrific. I was initially attracted to this course because of its dual
aims of upskilling GPs in being able to teach patients mindfulness techniques, and improving
GPs' well-being. I found the breadth of mindfulness practice techniques taught was great as some certainly appealed to me more than others. I found the lectures interesting and soothing, and I felt the trainer's (Lisa) sense of kindness, compassion and genuine wish for participant well-being was very apparent.
I really enjoyed the presentation style of the trainer. She was calm, informative, warm and
easy to connect with. My most favourite part of the course were the actual meditations. In
particular, I enjoyed the loving kindness meditation. I like that the course
emphasizes the role of compassionate presence in mindfulness
This really was an excellent course. I had learning mindfulness and meditation on my to do list for several years now and finally I have completed a long-held goal. Thank you for
putting together such an excellent course and addressing issues that I had been having, such as focus etc and providing a variety of ways to meditate and be mindful. The lectures given were very thought provoking. I have to say your voice was also very relaxing, which really
helps. I'm certainly happier since I started the course, so thank you.
Very impressed with this course- and will go back to listen to the lectures and meditation
exercises in the weeks to come. Really enjoyed this - am currently on maternity leave, and have found this course has significantly helped me engage further with my young children (who it seems have no trouble being aware in the present moment!) Have learned huge amounts particularly the stress contagion concept, as well as the physiological benefits of mindfulness
I found that this course was absolutely amazing. I have often struggled in the past with overwhelm and stress, and have tried meditation but never been able to "get it". This course has allowed me to leave my expectations at the door, and find a calmer point of view, with supportive videos and meditations, and whilst I am not at a full 20 minute solo meditation yet, I know that this is just the start of my meditation practice. I am so grateful!
