What are Australian GPs saying about the Medical Mindfulness 101 Evidence-Based CPD Course?

"I like the balance of science evidence based information to complete the meditation components."

"Was very helpful and gave me a broader understanding of what mindfulness is about. Helpful to put grounding with breathing/focussed attention into practice daily, as a way of stepping back and seeing the bigger picture.

Thank you, very helpful and enjoyable."

"I really enjoyed this course as it helped me as well as helping my patients. I thought it was well presented and easy to engage with.  I do not think there are any improvements and I am really grateful I found it as part of my Focused Psychological Therapies CPD updating."

"More awareness and appreciation of nature in my surroundings. Greater awareness of unhelpful thoughts and ability to reframe them."

"The course was well crafted and encouraging for developing a personal mindfulness practice."

"You should be congratulated +++ for bringing this to the medical profession - and wider community. It's amazing - when I trained, medical schools had no focus on doctors looking after themselves, so they can look after others. Now they can! Keep up the fantastic work."

"I am so surprised by how much my life has changed in the space of a few months! A few months ago I was considering quitting my job as I was so burnt out and miserable at work. Increasing mindfulness and having moments of mindfulness throughout my day at work has transformed them...I honestly feel like a new person."

"Loved the course. I feel I have learnt powerful skills to make my life and medical practice more meaningful.
I feel more engaged in consultations and have new treatment modalities for stress, chronic pain, anxiety."

"It's a fabulous course! I wish there were more courses like this in my early career. It's so essential for healthcare workers to practice self care for ourselves rather than continuous self sacrifice for our patients. I think the weekly topics are structured well. They are relevant and very easy to follow and understand."

"I wanted to help my patients but I have actually helped myself first. I didn’t realise how burnt out I actually was and now I feel I can cope."

"It was delivered in a gentle and encouraging way, I was surprised by the pre and post questionnaire results. It really did work to reduce my response to stress, I am grateful I took the time to undergo this course."

"My PSS has improved in terms of my self compassion. I have again encouraged my patients to journal and be more structured and intentional in their own self care. It has been a very effective tool to remind myself to use more intentionally."

"Dear Lisa, Thank you for offering the mindfulness course to health professionals, so needed in this particular space...My main surprise was I thought I was pretty good at self care...but the screens done for this course made me realise I have quite a lot more work to do - I feel...like I have been given a gift e.g. "Wait, you mean I can feel even more calm and enjoy life even more??"

"You have done an excellent job of integrating the practice with the theory..."
"Thank you for this course...You have skilfully wrangled doctors who generally like to focus on learning theory, into experiential learning."

It has made me more insightful to patient's need, attuned to their needs and unspoken
words. It helped a lot of my patients with mental health, day to day stressors and chronic
pain. Being an integrative GP who is also trained in Focused Psychological Strategies and
working in culturally and linguistic diverse population, it has helped me tremendously.

Everybody in my clinic including the receptionists, practice manger who are often the first point of contact for patients could all benefit from learning and practicing mindfulness, but it is more especially so for my other doctor colleagues and the Practice Nurses.

I intend to gradually discuss how much I have benefited from mindfulness with my colleagues and then encourage them register for the course as well.

I have noted that I am much more aware when I am in a stressful situation and am trying to implement the mindfulness practices I have learnt through this course.

It does help with the
chronic pain I myself have and in these situations I do turn to the meditation techniques which does help especially when trying to fall asleep at night.

This course has improved my stress levels and reduced my level of burnout which in turn
has improved my capacity to care for my patients well

By being more mindful and in the present means that you give your attention to the patient at hand and therefore listen more, less likely to make mistakes.

If your are not as stressed this also will help the patient to feel calmer and perceive their consultation in a more positive way.

The regular practice of mindfulness improved my stress levels which has a positive impact on my performance as a GP

I am more focused at one task rather than multitasking, more empathetic and more chilled out as per my family. I have noticed I am more calm and less irritated at end of day. Just being mindful has made me more at peace. My perceived stress score has decreased from 33 to 19 by doing this 8 week course.

It allows me to manage my own emotions and also de-stress myself due to my hectic work schedule.

I have found my ability to manage anticipated and actual challenging situations much
improved. I have also started to introduce techniques learned to patients where
appropriate.

Less bothered by situations outside of my control Living closer to my values (even if that has meant difficult activities and conversations)

Able to better identify what is important and
warrants my attention.

I am less stressed. at work and at home. Able to cope better with stressful situations. I have
been more effective at work, able to give my best to my patients. Work place is more
relaxing environment and staffs are happier.

I have more acceptance and gratitude in daily life . Interacting with others has been better
incorporating the loving kindness. I have been less stressed and I really like using the
anchors to incorporate mindfulness into daily life. Very worthwhile course.

I am calmer! I am more able to stop and step back, and make decisions
about how to react. I am coping better with stress and pain. I am able to note my mind
wandering and guide it back (and I have ADHD!). I have been able to moderate my negative emotions so that they have less impact on me and those around me.

In my personal life I feel that I am a better mother to my toddler as I am able to let go more of things I cannot control and not be too harsh on myself when mistakes happen.

I have noticed my stress levels are lower, I feel more resent and less caught up in thoughts and worries about the future. I feel less reactive to negative thoughts. My wellbeing has improved and I am enjoying my work more.

I am less stressed at work and home. easier to focus and to be present at the moment. I
have stopped multitasking and it is more efficient and calming. I feel more connected and present with my patients.

I have been more mindful at home and at work. It is easier to be mindful at home as when at work everything is so busy and chaotic.

I have found myself noticing more in the environment ie sounds and smells and sensations. I have noticed I pause more to reflect, regroup when I am stressed at work. Lisa's suggestions of how to do this during a working day were very helpful. It is amazing how quickly you can notice a benefit with mindfulness.
Loving kindness is a great way to approach life.

Much calmer, happier, more attentive I have actually started to really enjoy medicine again
and seeing patients. I feel i can connect better with them Also, things at home with my wife and kids just feel much happier and easier.
