Simply listening to our podcasts qualifies as an Educational Activity. Regular podcast listeners can often listen to 6-7 hours of podcasts per week, so it is incredibly easy to accumulate Education Activity CPD.

Across the year, GPs need 50 CPD hours: up to 25 hours of Educational Activities, and a combined 25 hours of Reviewing Performance and Measuring Outcomes, including at least five hours of each.

If you’d like to earn beyond Educational Activity CPD, the next step is Reviewing Performance, which simply means reflecting on how what you’ve heard compares with what you currently do.

For example if you listen to an episode on cognitive decline, you might ask yourself:

• How confident am I at distinguishing normal cognitive ageing from MCI or early dementia?
• Do I routinely consider dementia mimics like Lewy body disease, LATE, or sleep disorders?
• Am I still defaulting to CT imaging, or am I using MRI appropriately when indicated?

You don’t need to change anything yet. Even a short written reflection of a few sentences is enough to support Reviewing Performance CPD.

For Measuring Outcomes, think about a small, practical change you could implement. Perhaps after listening to a podcast on migraines you decide to encourage migraine patients to start a headache diary or use a migraine tracking app to monitor triggers and treatment efficacy.

After a month, review patient outcomes: have headache frequency or severity improved? Document your reflections in your CPD log and calculate how much time you invested in this practice experiment.

Finally, RACGP, ACRRM and my CPD Home will only award CPD for activities 30 minutes or longer. So 'batch' you listening and claim 'once a week' for your 5-6 hours of listening and reflection.

So whilst you can listen while commuting, exercising, or during lunch breaks, the key is active reflection: pause after segments, note insights in your CPD diary, and consider small practice changes you could implement. Over time, these small adjustments add up to measurable improvements in patient care and meaning CPD hours.

Remember, the RACGP framework encourages intentional reflection and documentation, listening alone isn’t enough, tie your learning back to your daily practice and earn Measuring Outcomes and Reviewing Performance CPD as well!
